Sixth Grade Second Place in Creative Writing
Climate Change or Global Warming is one of the biggest challenges` mankind is
facing. Climate change is a big problem and its negative consequences will
become worse over time. It is important to recognise the problem, find a
solution and take immediate action. But what can I do? I am just a 6th grader,
no scientist, politician or social media influencer. I don`t even have social
media tools, forget having a million followers.
The consequences of global warming can be disastrous. Hurricanes, droughts
and floods are all effects of the problem. Low lying areas will get submerged in
water due to the rising sea level if we go on like this.
We need to do something about climate change, and fast. We may be young
but that does not mean we can`t do anything. Even we, as students have a role
in the fight against climate change. We can make a difference and here is how.
To find a solution to a problem we first need to understand the problem. I am
conducting my research about global warming and trying to understand more
about what is happening.
One way we can fight global warming is to reduce the amount of air pollution
in the air. If we walk short distances, carpool etc. to avoid burning of fuels
which cause pollution levels to rise, we will emit fewer greenhouse gasses. Buy
fruits and vegetables without packaging, turn of the lights when you are not in
the room, buy recycled items, try not to use plastic bottles and carry your own
cloth bag when you go for groceries. These minor changes in how we work can
help us reduce climate change.
And the most important, and the easiest of all the things we can do is spread
awareness. We can tell our family and friends about climate change and what
we can do about it. The more people who know about the problem, the more
people will do something about it which will have a positive impact.
Like Greta Thunberg said, if there is one thing the Coronavirus pandemic has
shown us, its that we can treat a “crisis like a crisis”. And if we want, we can
stop climate change, even us students. Even we have a role in the fight against
global warming.
